About the Hawaiian Monk Seal

Curious and independent, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is a graceful and elegant swimmer. Sufers who have shared the break with the ‘ilio-holo-i-ka uaua, (dog who runs in the rough water) are unlikely to forget the experience. The seal’s historic interaction with humanity seems as obscure as the dark waters of its native environment. Perhaps the rarest marine mammal in the world, this animal is one of the many natural treasures of Hawai‘i.
